Upcoming Class: Hip Power and Mobility
The pelvis is the largest bony mass in the body and all the strongest muscles attach to it: the glutes, the abs, the hamstrings, the quads, the back muscles. It is also in the center of the body, and therefore critically involved in all the the basic movements: walking, running, squatting, throwing, kicking. So good coordinated pelvic movement is one of the major building blocks for a functional body.
Unfortunately, the pelvis tends to get neglected in modern life - we just drop it into a cushy chair for most of the day and don't place any demands on it for coordinated movement. If the rule of function is "use it or lose it", then the pelvis is one area where great losses tend to occur.
With that in mind, I am teaching a five week series of classes that focus on hip mobility. The goal is to reclaim some of the power and freedom of movement that comes from coordinated hips and low back.
Here's a little more detail about what, where, when, and how.
Classes will be held Tuesdays evenings, 6-7pm, from March 5, 2012 through April 2.
These classes will focus on coordinating the hips with the low back and trunk. We will work on opening the hip joints, reducing unnecessary tension and stiffness, and developing power and coordination. Some of the lessons will involve some fun playful movements like holding the feet and rolling. This is an excellent class for athletes, people who spend a lot of time sitting, or anyone who wants to improve the way they move and feel.
The classes are based on the Feldenkrais Method. If you haven't been to a Feldenkrais class before, you will most likely end up doing some movements you haven't done in a long time (but you probably did them when you were a baby.) If you want to know what a Feldenkrais Awareness ATM lesson is like, you can do some free samples here.
Classes will be held at Room 35 on the second floor of the brick building of the Phinney Ridge Community Center at 6615 Dayton Ave. N, Seattle.
(Please note that the community center has two buildings - a blue building at street level on Phinney, and a brick building down the hill with its own parking lot. You want to go to the brick building. Directions to the brick building are here.)
The cost is $10 per class or $8 per class if you want to pay for all six in advance. The classes build on a common theme but each can be done separately.
